What is iyappan swami?

Iyappan Swami, also known as Ayyappa Swami or Lord Ayyappa, is a popular Hindu deity worshiped mainly in South India, particularly in the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. He is believed to be the son of Lord Shiva and the feminine form of Vishnu (Mohini), making him a unique and revered figure in Hindu mythology.

Ayyappa is often portrayed as a celibate deity who is known for his strict adherence to Dharma (righteousness) and his ability to dispel the troubles of his devotees. He is also considered a deity of growth, prosperity, and protection, and is believed to be accessible to all, regardless of caste, creed, or gender.

Devotees of Ayyappa typically observe a 41-day penance before visiting his shrine, Sabarimala, located in the Western Ghats of Kerala. Pilgrims undertake a challenging trek to reach the hill shrine, where they offer their prayers to seek the blessings of Lord Ayyappa. The pilgrimage season, known as Mandala-Makaravilakku, attracts millions of devotees from all over the country.

In addition to his popular shrine at Sabarimala, Ayyappa is also worshipped in many temples across South India, where special rituals and festivals are held in his honor. He is usually depicted as a young and handsome deity clad in black or blue garments, holding a bow and arrow, and surrounded by his loyal companion, the tiger.
